Boonsboro Country Club presents an exceptional golf experience marked by outstanding course conditions, top-tier staff engagement, and a welcoming, classic clubhouse atmosphere. The hospitality and food-and-beverage experience elevate the day even further. The Rat Pack–style dining room delivers a nostalgic 50s–60s vibe, and the newly built outdoor bar overlooking the 9th tee and 18th green adds an inviting social hub for post-round relaxation. On-course service also stands out, with Lily’s fully stocked beverage cart receiving special commendation.
The hole-by-hole experience reflects a course rich with variety, featuring blind tee shots, elevation changes, small and undulating greens, and strategic bunkering. Several holes demand precise positioning off the tee, while others offer generous landing areas and visually appealing backdrops. Membership at Boonsboro is full with a waiting list—a testament to its quality and reputation. Colonial Hills Golf Club
Last June, 2023, Virginia Golf Course Reviews visited Colonial Hills Golf Club. It’s a gem! The new ownership has plans for modernizing – new driving range in construction, upgrading the clubhouse to get started. At the time of our visit, there was still some work to do on the cart paths, hole signs and a few spots in the fairways and approaches to the greens, you’d be hard-pressed to find greens that rolled better than these do.
Colonial Hills exceeds expectations. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome and at ease. This public facility is enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels and clearly reflects an ownership group committed to providing a quality, accessible golf experience.
The course conditions were impressive. Greens were in outstanding shape, fairways were well maintained, bunkers were consistent, and most tee boxes were in good condition. Ongoing investments are evident, including a new driving range and a spacious practice green behind the clubhouse. The new golf carts are comfortable and equipped with GPS that was consistently accurate within two yards.
The course is a par 71 measuring approximately 6,350 yards from the back tees. While not long by modern standards, it presents a strategic challenge. Tree-lined fairways and rolling terrain demand accuracy, while small, firm, fast greens with subtle breaks reward precise approach shots. Water hazards, strategically placed bunkers, and numerous risk-reward opportunities create an engaging layout for players of all abilities. The par 3s are particularly memorable, requiring both length and accuracy.
Several holes stand out. Hole 17 is a reachable par 5 featuring a blind uphill tee shot and a strategically placed fairway bunker that influences second-shot decisions. Hole 5 is a beautiful downhill par 3 over water to a shallow green perched above a stone wall, offering both challenge and visual appeal. Hole 14 is another scenic downhill par 3 over water that demands a precise tee shot. Holes 3 and 12 are exciting drivable par 4s that reward bold play while punishing poor execution.

Falling River Country Club
There’s a lot to love at Falling River Country Club – great service and a fun, challenging course that tests your short game. The rural ambiance, gently rolling hills and undulating greens give you all you need to have for a great golf experience. While the clubhouse and practice facilities are unpretentious, the course is well-conditioned, fairways in superb condition and the greens roll very nicely.
There’s a lot to love at Falling River Country Club – great service and a fun, challenging course that tests your short game. The rural ambiance, gently rolling hills and undulating greens give you all you need to have for a great golf experience. While the clubhouse and practice facilities are unpretentious, the course is well-conditioned, fairways in superb condition and the greens roll very nicely. A unique feature of Falling River CC: 9 consecutive par 4s from hole 5 – 13, varying lengths and designs! How great is that. They could claim two signature holes: the par 3, 3rd hole is directly downhill, guarded by water in front and a large roll off the back; the par 5, 18th is a risk-reward hole where a long 2nd shot could have you putting for eagle! If you miss – in the water! Our guys at Virginia Golf Course Reviews highly recommend this course following a visit in July 2022.
Ivy Hill Golf Club
On a recent visit to Ivy Hill Golf Club we found – hills! Yes, it’s aptly named. But what a pleasure to play this course. There is rarely a straight hole, unless it’s a par 3. It’s as beautiful as it is hilly. Ivy Hill has everything a country club would want – food & beverage is what you might expect, but the practice facilities are fabulous, the greens slightly above average and the fairways – there is rarely a flat spot, and the bunkers – generally in good shape.

Favorite holes?
Hole 6 – an elevated tee across a creek to a dogleg right, and an uphill fairway. All the challenge you’d enjoy for a Par 5.
Hole 12 – A narrow dogleg right hole – keep the driver in the bag. On the 2nd shot, cross the creek to the relatively flat green.

London Downs Golf Course
Virginia Golf Course Reviews made a visit August 2022 to London Downs Golf Course. This semi-private course designed by Russell Breeden opened in 1991 to be ‘friendly’ and ‘easy’ to play. We found the staff friendly, but the challenge of this course isn’t necessarily easy! But it’s fun!

We found the staff friendly, but the challenge of this course isn’t necessarily easy! But it’s fun! Though relatively flat, the front nine is tight, with homes near the fairways and water in play on most of these holes. The back nine is more links style with many doglegs and one island green. This course is highly recommended.
Poplar Grove

The course is challenging, but not difficult. The views were amazing. The greens are in pristine condition, rolling true and hold approach shots. The five tee boxes offer a course length for every level of golfer.
